a toddler's guide to packing

We are off to Southbourne this weekend, to our family flat on the sea front, just along from Bournemouth, that my grandparents bought over 30 years ago. All my childhood holidays, that I can remember were down at Southbourne, and both me, my big and small boys have had their first holidays on this little bit of English sea side.

I couldn't imagine ever not keeping the flat within the family. It's the only place you are allowed to walk up the zig zag path from the sea side, with no shoes on, even if you bring sandy feet into the flat!

My grandparents bought a beach hut too, all those years ago, and we have had brilliant bbq's down there, come rain or shine!

I will take lots of photos to share with you on Monday, as the only downside is there is not a scrap of service and no internet connection so it will be a twitter free weekend. Yikes! I might get withdrawal symptoms!

I have been telling big boy all week we are going and that my sister and her husband are coming too. He adores them and can't wait for Uncle to spin him round on the beach, "doing dizzy whizzy" as he affectionately calls their little ritual.

He decided this afternoon that he needed to pack his suitcase, all by himself. He disappeared upstairs and came down all packed and ready to go! Bless his heart, as we are not leaving until 7pm so they can have their normal bath and milk routine, then sleep in the car!

This is what he packed:

7 pairs of new shorts (still with tags as for this summer!)

2 pairs of swimming trunks (brave considering I imagine the sea will be fairly nippy!)

1 pair of summer pyjamas, but at least he picked a matching pair!

And 2 new t-shirts that I bought for this time next year and hid in the back of the wardrobe, because they were on sale.

Oh and the trumpet wouldn't fit but apparently that is coming with us to!

So he clearly thinks we are off to sunny climes for a weekend of swimming and trumpet playing!

He even said he had to lie on it to shut it! Just like we do when we have over packed!

Might have to secretly repack in a minute!

P.S His suitcase was from Cath Kidston 3 years ago, so not on the website anymore, but they have a gorgeous soldier one now!

blog it for babies

I have just heard some awful news that a lovely girl I went to school with has just lost her one day old little girl. Even though I haven't seen her since school, I feel heartbroken for her. I can't even begin to imagine the pain that tiny angel's parents are feeling right now. We are so fortunate in this country to have some of the world's best medical equipment to help the tiny ones who come into this world, needing more than just a helping hand. Even then, sometimes all the care and equipment in the world can't save those precious babies who are only with us for a very short time.

But there are babies all over the world who do not even have the chance to fight for survival, due to lack of medical facilities in the delivery room.

I support the Blog it for Babies campaign.

From Sunday 29th April to Friday 4th May, Bloggers and Vloggers from across the UK are coming together to raise awareness and funds for Save The Children’s Build it for Babies campaign.

13 cities and towns will play host to loads of mini-events and fun fundraising ideas.

Blog it for Babies hope to raise money for selected equipment for a delivery room in a healthcare clinic in Bangladesh. It would be a fantastic achievement for a campaign started by parents who are lucky enough to be able to take their babies and children to their GP’s when they are ill to be able to save the lives of little ones in Bangladesh who sadly do not have the same chance.

It takes less than a minute to text donate £1 so do it now! Just click the link here.

Sometimes it is easy, when your desperately worried about your baby to get frustrated with your GP's appointment booking system or out of hours service but imagine if we didn't have any of these options how scared would we be then for our poorly little ones.

Mummies and Daddies are the best multi tasters in the world so whilst you are cooking tea or getting the bath ready text £1. If we are all able to get trending topics on twitter imagine how much money we could raise if everyone gave just a £1.

a husband who works from home - advantage or disadvantage?!

For the last 3 years my husband has worked from home for a small, but successful, web marketing agency. It gave us the opportunity to get our dogs, with the peace of mind that he would be at home to be with them during the day and after a year in the house, in a spare room, we converted the back of the garage to a perfect office space. It is everything he wants and I had no influence over the decor or finishing touches. Luckily as we have similar tastes, it is a  modern, masculine but intimate space in a calming shade of duck egg blue, which I think looks stylish and sometimes I am slightly envious of.

I have worked form home myself since November 2010 and have given up the chance to have an office as the boys will get more benefit from having a great playroom. I generally work from the kitchen or when I have to look at large plans I use the dining table. One day, I would love an office of my own (I have a dream office pinboard on Pinterest) but I'm not sure I can convince him to do a little extension! Maybe when the boys are older and I can work more and earn the money to pay for it!

People often say it must be great having him at home and sometimes it is, but sometimes I just wish he had a "normal" job where he set off in the morning and we could welcome him home at night.

There is never a goodbye, a little face at the window waiting impatiently for Daddy, the conquering hero to return, and run into his arms like you see in the movies.

It does give us, as a family, an enormous amount of flexibility which I would find hard to live without, although it does mean he can see the times I am not coping with the children very well and when I am still in pyjamas well beyond breakfast time!

I worry that it is quite isolated for him, that he sits and stares at a screen all day, so it's a blessing we have the dogs, which gives him a reason to get out for a long walk at lunch times. He's waiting for a skateboard, yes you read right, to be delivered today which he is going to take on his trips to the dog park! But I suppose he doesn't get the opportunity to go out for a drink after work with his office colleagues and as soon as he finishes, we are into the bath and bed, wind down routine.

I've drawn up a list of pros and cons, have a read! Feel free to add any you feel apply to you if your other half also works from home!

I think on balance I like him being 2 minutes away and the fact that I can Skype him to come in if there is an emergency.

He's been able to be at a lot of the pre school events that most of the Dads missed, like the half hour Easter Hat Parade.

Sometimes, he has a shower at midday, so I won't feel too guilty if there is an odd occasion I rock pyjamas until lunch!

Do your other halves work from home or do you wish they did?!
